Sant Hirdaram Girls College Bhopal

Introduction

Vermicompost an organic manure is nothing but excreta of earthworm which is rich in humus & nutrients, therefore serve as a good source of manure for growing crops.

It improves soil texture, aeration, water holding capacity & prevent soil erosion. Vermicompost is free from pathogens toxic elements, weeds, seed etc. It contain vitamins, enzymes & hormones like auxin gibberellins etc. It enhances the decomposition of organic matters in soil. It minimizes the incidence of pests & diseases.

Objective

  • Awareness among students & society about benefit of Organic Farming.
  • Propagation of Vermicompost among farmers for better yield of Crop.
  • To develop training, skill & team work spirit among students & society.
  • Aware the students to make their own unit.

Verm Technology

Verm Technology is a method of converting all the biodegradable wastes e.g. Farm wastes, kitchen wastes etc. into useful product through the action of earthworms.

Benefits of Vermicompost

  • Productive utilization of organic waste materials eg. Agriculture wastes, forest litter, agro based industrial wastes etc.
  • Vermicompost is store house of plant nutrients.
  • To improve physical, chemical & biological properties of soil & ensure better, crop productivity.

Pit Method

The four square (Chamber) pit composting is an ideal system of preparing organic manure i.e. compost which replaces chemical fertilizers & enhances the crop yield with the activity of earthworm.

Materials: Cow dung, biomass, waste of plants & animals, earthworms, brick, cement, sand, green grass or leaves, water.

Size: 10’×10’×1.5

Construction: Under the shade of tree four square pit (Chamber) was constructed by lying a lattice of wall of bricks. It divided the area of pit from the base into four roughly equal parts or sections with brick wall. Made a ventilation hole in the dividing walls to ensure adequate supply of air during composting. Out of which two chambers (Pits) were filled with the mixture of biomass & cow dung with water to maintain a moisture between 60-75% & two chambers remained vacant, after 10 days earthworms are introduced in pit. This material was turned after 15 days & thereafter at an interval of 30 days. After each turning water is sprinkled to maintain sufficient moisture. Compost (dark soil like granular substance) become ready within 3-4 months. After 45 days earthworms move from one chamber to another (second) chamber. Thus one chamber provides about 5-6 quintal of compost.
